If your eyes can’t make enough tears, one effective strategy is to preserve what you have. Tears drain out of the eye through the puncti – tiny openings in the corner of your eyelids in your upper and lower lids.
After you initial dry eye consultation, you will be advised of your suitability for punctal plugging. There procedure involves measuring the size of the openings of the drainage tubes. We then using a special injector to gently insert the plug.  Local anaesthetic drops are applied so you won’t feel a thing!

How Long Before it Works?
For most patients, the eyes feel less dry after 1 to 3 days. You will most likely need to continue to take artificial tears – especially when working on a computer or before driving.
Temporary plugs last up to 6 months. They are made from a dissolvable suture material. Although, known as ‘permanent’ plugs, these may dislodge and fall out. They may also be removed if they feel uncomfortable.
